Pets: Thanks for our PetsIf our pets could talk, I’m sure they’d tell us how thankful they are for their human friends, caretakers and families. As you contemplate all the things and people you’re thankful for this year, think of your pets and all the gifts they give you every day . . . and I don’t mean the smelly kind!
Pets: Learning from our dogs - excited for homecomingsEveryone loves how excited their dogs get when they come home. My beagle from growing up has this loud, piercing seal-sounding bark that she reserves especially for when her people come home. She seal barks when I come to visit after being away for a few months, and she seal barks when my dad comes home for lunch, after being gone a few hours.
Travel: Mendocino In the Company of DogsI awoke this morning to the din of a jackhammer tearing up the pavement in front of my house. Right away I longed to be back in Mendocino where I spent the last few days. There, the only sounds in the mornings were from distant waves crashing against ocean rocks and the pitter patter of not one, but two sets of paws, trotting about our vacation rental house.
Politics: Gov. Schwazenegger slaps pet owners with additional taxesAs if we’re not already overly generous for helping bailout Bear Sterns, AIG, and other banks under the Trouble Asset Relief Program, now our state government wants pet owners to subsidize short falls in revenue by taxing veterinarian services starting February 1, 2009.
Parks: Walkin' the Dog at Lafayette ReservoirTwo or three times a week I take my buddy Baxter up to the Lafayette Reservoir just off Highway 24 near the Lafayette BART station. No matter what the weather, there are plenty of great sights to see as you walk on the lakeside or high country trails.
Practical Advice: Earthquake Safety Kit for your PetCall me a paranoid pet parent, but the possibility for earthquakes never used to bother be until I got my dogs. Now, suddenly, I've become responsible and prepared – I guess that's what having a kid (human or canine) can do to you! Here are some things I've learned along the way to help keep your pooch safe:
Parks: Pooch Play - Glen Canyon, Urban OasisMention Glen Canyon to most folks in the Bay Area and they say they’ve never heard of it. I hadn’t either until a few years ago when my husband and I moved to the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco.
Practical Advice: How to find a great pet sitterAs the Holidays approach, you might be thinking about your travel plans. Airline reservations, places to stay, points of interest all take up your extra time. Suddenly it occurs to you: What will we do about the pets?
Go Green: San Francisco Muni and your petIf you're among the increasing number of urban-dwellers who opt not to have a car, don't think that you also can't have pets. Or that having pets require you to have a car. Sure, there are definitely some instances in which it would be easier, but getting your dog used to public transit doesn't have to be a huge obstacle.
Pet Etiquette: Thanksgiving “Petiquette”The menu’s planned, the guests are invited, and you’ve gone all Martha Stewart this year and mapped out your food preparation schedule for the annual Thanksgiving feast. You’re ready but is Sadie?
Practical Advice: Our Greatest ResponsibilityI am a frequent visitor to the Hoffman's Reptiles here in Concord, CA. At first, Dan Hoffman might not strike you as a typical "pet store" owner. Good thing, because he's far from it. Posted right on the cashier's counter is this framed statement:
Your Health & Wellness: Pets & ZenEver notice how "in the moment" your pet is? A dog chewing on a bully stick or marrow bone is doing just that. Nothing else. A cat batting a feather is doing just that. Nothing else.
Pet Etiquette: A More Civilized Dog ParkImagine this: You're at the Mall, looking in shop windows and thinking about heading for the food court. Out of nowhere, somebody you've never met veers across the walkway and stands right next to you. They start asking you questions, looking in your bags, sniffing your hair and not letting you move forward. Second scenario: Same place, same unknown person. They stop you with an "Excuse me", and ask where the nearest Orange Julius stand is. You give your answer, they thank you and move on. Which person do you want to meet?
Pets: Oldies but GoodiesWhy adopt a senior? Well, for one thing, puppies and kittens don’t have the corner on the market on cuteness. Take a look at these pictures from Muttville, a San Francisco-based rescue organization devoted to adopting out senior dogs. Those mutts are plenty cute!
Parks: Pooch Play - Ocean BeachNovember's nearly upon us. Suddenly the days are much shorter, the air is crisp and chilly, and the wind's picking up. So why am I blogging about Ocean Beach, you ask? Because it's not too late to find some sun, take in gorgeous views of the Pacific, and unleash your dog for a beach romp.
