Life's a Ball! at A.Muse Gallery: A Benefit for SF ACC Shelter Dogs

On Thursday, September 16th, San Francisco Animal Care & Control are hosting their Life's a Ball fundraiser to help bridge the gap between the services they need to provide for their dogs, and the recent and proposed budget cuts at the ACC shelter. The ACC does their best to make sure that the dogs in their care have everything they need to cope with the stressful experience of living in a shelter. While there used to be an adequate budget available for the dogs to live comfortably in their temporary home, these days the shelter is relying more heavily on the generosity of the public to provide things like toys, treats, leashes for the dogs, and to bring in experienced professionals to help train the dogs in preparation for their subsequent adoptions.

Following on from that is a natural desire for the health of our planet, as well, and it's nice to find companies that share those goals and follow a strict code of ethics when it comes to making decisions that affect our pets as well as the earth.

Got a Driven Dog? Try DriveBall!

If you have the kind of dog who constantly needs things to keep her occupied and to keep her out of potentially destructive boredom, you may have already thought of herding as an activity to give her something constructive to do. However, herding doesn't always work out for every dog - there are some breeds that have the herding instinct in them from birth, and other dogs may only ever see livestock as something to chase or hunt. DriveBall gives any dog of any breed a chance to participate in herding activities, as there are no stock animals involved, and the entire sport centers around large exercise balls.

SF SPCA's Free New Dog 101 Class + Help For Your Shy Dog

When most people think about getting a dog, they have fantasies of frisbee games in the park, walks and hikes along coastal areas, and introducing the dog to adoring friends. While most dogs are gregarious and playful around people, some have an inexplicable fear of all kinds of situations. Even the sound of people talking can send them running away to hide, which means meeting new people is next to impossible, and simple tasks like going on a walk are too frightening even to think about. This can lead to frustration on your part, and constant terror and stress on the part of your dog.

I love to find pet shops that think outside the box a bit. Obviously they need to have all the basics - accessories, collars, toys, treats, and so forth. But it's nice to see when the proprietors of a pet shop have put a little additional thought into the stock they choose, and Plaza de Paws in Burlingame has all those extras that other shops don't have, little things that will keep you coming back again and again.
