Animals Just Want to Have Fun!

Cats just want to have fun. So do dogs, rabbits, dolphins, chimps and goldfish among many other species. Animals have a pleasure principle. They do certain things for fun or just because they feel good.

While this isn’t news to pet lovers, up to now science hasn’t exactly embraced animals’ capacity for pleasure. Instead, scientific study has focused on their pain, suffering, stress, and distress.

Thanks for our Pets

If our pets could talk, I’m sure they’d tell us how thankful they are for their human friends, caretakers and families. As you contemplate all the things and people you’re thankful for this year, think of your pets and all the gifts they give you every day . . . and I don’t mean the smelly kind!

Learning from our dogs: excited for homecomings

Everyone loves how excited their dogs get when they come home. My beagle from growing up has this loud, piercing seal-sounding bark that she reserves especially for when her people come home. She seal barks when I come to visit after being away for a few months, and she seal barks when my dad comes home for lunch, after being gone a few hours.

I am a frequent visitor to the Hoffman's Reptiles here in Concord, CA. At first, Dan Hoffman might not strike you as a typical "pet store" owner. Good thing, because he's far from it. Posted right on the cashier's counter is this framed statement:

Ever notice how "in the moment" your pet is? A dog chewing on a bully stick or marrow bone is doing just that. Nothing else. A cat batting a feather is doing just that. Nothing else.
