Short-Faced Dogs More Likely to Die in Air Cargo Holds
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a warning that short-faced dog breeds are more likely to die when traveling in airplane cargo holds. The warning is based on a DOT report of air cargo dog deaths since May 2005, when airlines were first required to start making this information public.
In the past 5 years, 122 dogs have died in air cargo transit, as have 22 other types of pets traveling in air cargo. Of the 122 dogs that died, approximately half were short-snouted breeds including English Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boxers and American Staffordshire Terriers.

Road Trippin' With Fido: Popular Pet-Friendly Destinations in Northern California
Since I adopted my dog a vacation doesn’t feel like a real vacation unless he goes too. Over the last few years, that’s meant less travel to places that require me getting on a plane and more road trips to dog-friendly destinations. Do I miss traveling to faraway places? Absolutely. But you know what they say about silver linings. I have two. I get to spend loads of quality time with my dog, and I’ve discovered amazing places practically in the Bay Area’s back yard that I may have overlooked if not for him.
Safe Pet Travel Means Safer Travel for Humans
Obama’s Cash for Clunkers program has gotten lots of folks thinking about upgrading their gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient rides. If you have a pet, you might want to consider another factor when searching for a new vehicle, or whenever you’re driving for that matter -- your pet’s safety.
Pet Express - The Travel Specialist Since 1978!
I once spent hours and hours researching how best to get a dog I'd rescued while living in Italy back to the states. If I'd known about Pet Express, I could've saved myself a lot of time and hassle. Of course, I probably was going the wrong way (Europe to US, when Pet Express deals with US-based transport), but they still probably could've given me useful information!
To Rent a Vacation Home or Stay in a Hotel?
Summer’s here, the weather’s sprucing up, and a little R&R may be on your mind. Like many Americans, you may be thinking about getting away. Boarding your dog or hiring a pet sitter quickly racks up the price of a vacation. Luckily, there’s more choice these days in dog-friendly accommodations – hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals.
Hitch a Ride with San Francisco's Pet Taxi
I lived for a long time in the city without a car, and I loved it. No worrying about parking, driving, insurance, tickets, etc. But it did make it a little more complicated when I got puppies. We started taking them on the bus when they were around eight weeks old, but that was much easier when they were smaller, less noisy, and more easily entertained.
Come Fly Away on PetAirlines
It’s true. You do learn something new every day. I just learned that there’s now an airline just for pets! Pet Airways is now accepting reservations for critters only. The first flights will take off on July 14th at an introductory fare of $149.00 each way. Inaugural cities include New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC/Baltimore, and Denver.
Get Around Town with your Hound - SF Bay Area Pet Friendly MUNI and BART
I've mentioned several times about our experiences taking our puppies on MUNI before we had a car. We had some good experiences and some bad ones, but the dogs were always good, and I'm glad we were forced to travel like this when they were tiny as they were able to get acclimated to this somewhat unusual mode of transport early. Several months on, I'm not sure how they'd take to it, but when they were small enough to fit in our bags and play with their toys they did just fine.
