Pooch Play - Ocean Beach
November's nearly upon us. Suddenly the days are much shorter, the air is crisp and chilly, and the wind's picking up. So why am I blogging about Ocean Beach, you ask? Because it's not too late to find some sun, take in gorgeous views of the Pacific, and unleash your dog for a beach romp.
When the sun's out and I can manage it, I head to the beach with my dog Vinnie. Vin could care less what the temperature is. It's me that's the cold weather wimp -- I steer clear of the beach when the temperature drops below 60. But there are still days when Ocean Beach is grand.

Dogs need to be leashed on parts of Ocean Beach (between July 1 and May 15th of every year), but south of Sloat Boulevard and north of Stairwell 21 are currently year-round glorious off-leash expanses. Those may be Vinnie's absolute favorite off-leash stomping grounds in San Francisco. Mine too for that matter.
Ocean Beach has tremendous room for you and your dog to roam, splash in the water if you're so inclined, dig in the sand and run to your heart's content. There's wildlife too – lots of sea birds, the occasional whale and pods of dolphins not far from shore.
Next time you're longing for a mini-escape from urban life, head for Ocean Beach. Breathe in the sea air, admire the breaking waves, look for sand dollars, play fetch with your dog, or just let him run free. You'll feel refreshed and invigorated, and your dog will go home tired and extra-happy.
Don't take my word for it... a picture's worth a thousand woofs, don't you think?

Do bring waste bags and fresh water as there's none at Ocean Beach. Be sure your dog is under voice control and will come when you call him when you take him to off-leash areas.

For the most current policies on dogs at Ocean Beach, visit the Golden Gate National Area's website (http://www.nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/pets.htm).
