A Canine’s Review: Yorkville Cellars by Hairy Putter

There are three great reasons to visit Yorkville Cellars in Mendocino County.  First you can taste the difference in Deborah and Edward Wallo's certified organic wines, as 23 years of experience has made Yorkville’s harvest even sweeter over time. You can also witness a novelty, as Yorksville Cellars is believed to be the only winery that grows all six of the noble Bordeaux red varieties. And yes, the wine tasting here is still free – oh, and did we mention that its pet-friendly?

Hairy Putter , the official canine ambassador of Visit Mendocino County and roving reporter on all things tasty and playful shares with us a recent visit to Yorkville Cellars in his own words.

Yorkville Cellar’s tasting room and estate vineyards are located on Highway 128 at Mile Marker 40.4, in the tiny village of Yorkville, about half way between Cloverdale and Boonville, in beautiful Mendocino County, California.

Yorkville Cellars has a very charming and intimate tasting room that is very dog friendly, starting with the bowl of fresh water outside on the deck for us thirsty canines. There are also wooden picnic tables for some well-needed shade in summer and when it gets a little crowded inside the tasting room. There are also tables dotted around and under some magnificent old growth oak trees that are ideal for a picnic or just to sit and soak in the majesty of Anderson Valley while enjoying a fine bottle of Yorkville’s award winning wines.

Upon entering the tasting room I was greeted by lots of tail wagging from Shadow, the resident Black Labrador, and a purr or two from Pinky, the black cat. Bill who was the wine taster and host on duty the day we visited immediately offered me a welcome cookie and plenty of ear rubs.

One of the fun and interesting aspects of your visit will be the wealth of curious and revealing wine facts posted on the walls that your caregivers will have great fun reading while we are busy getting to know the four-legged residents as well as perusing the great selection of gifts and items available throughout the facility.

Yorkville Cellars produces many award winning wines in various varietals. Yorkville Cellars is certified organic by the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers). There are some wonderful historical story’s attached to the naming of some of the wines that Bill was only happy to share, I highly recommend visiting their website for more information on this fascinating winery. On the Yorkville Cellars website go to Our Wines and then Royal Pair where you will learn the Royal & French Bordeaux connection to Yorkville Cellars, it’s fascinating.
